MRSA-Pneumonia Combo Kills 11-Year-Old Girl From Tennessee

A Middle Tennessee elementary school student has died of a staph infection.

WTVF-TV reported the death on Sunday of 11-year-old Kristin Hunter, who was a student at North Sumner Elementary School in Bethpage, about 35 miles northeast of Nashville.

The station quoted Vanderbilt University Children's Hospital saying Kristin died of pneumonia and methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus — commonly called MRSA.

Sumner County Schools spokesman Jeremy Johnson said parents were notified by letter as soon as the case was diagnosed and the school building was scrubbed.

Johnson also said doctors at Vanderbilt said the infection that killed Kristin would not easily be passed to otherwise healthy students.
