A 22-year-old man has been ordered to prison for an attempted murder committed with a battle ax.
Scott Tyler Stapley was sentenced in 3rd District Court to a term of 3 years to life. In January, Stapley was convicted of a first-degree felony attempted murder for the attack on 17-year-old Justin Ennis.
Judge Judith Atherton also ordered Stapley to pay $2,848 in restitution to cover medical expenses for Ennis.
Stapley used a four-bladed warrior ax affixed with a spiky ball in the attack.
Ennis suffered multiple cuts to his neck, chest, shoulders and hands. Salt Lake County prosecutors say Ennis was left with major scarring.
A co-defendant, Cody Jesse Augustine, is awaiting trial. Augustine is accused of stabbing Ennis several times with a knife.
