Friends and acquaintances of Natasha Richardson express their shock at the actress' sudden death, and offer their condolences.

Jodie Foster, who co-starred with Richardson and Liam Neeson in the 1994 drama "Nell": "Natasha was brilliant, beautiful, funny, talented beyond measure, as emotionally raw as she was razor sharp. ... May Liam, her beautiful boys and her loving family hold her close as they move through this tragic moment."

Sam Mendes, who produced the Broadway musical "Cabaret" for which Richardson won a Tony Award in 1998: "She was one of a kind, a magnificent actress. ... She was also an amazing mother, a loyal friend and the greatest and most generous host you could ever hope to meet."

Lindsay Lohan, who co-starred with Richardson in a remake of "The Parent Trap" in 1998: "She was a wonderful woman and actress and treated me like I was her own. ... My heart goes out to her family. This is a tragic loss."

Oprah Winfrey: "I just want to say how deeply saddened I am, we all are, by the sudden passing of actress Natasha Richardson yesterday. Our thoughts and prayers are with her husband Liam Neeson, their two sons, the rest of their family and friends. Yet another reminder of how fleeting life can be and how precious. We need to value every moment."

Alan Cumming, who costarred with Richardson in the 1998 Broadway revival of Cabaret: "The term 'life force' seems trite but that is what she was: a woman who powered through life and fascinated everyone she encountered. I have been thinking about the times I spent with her since I heard the news of her tragic accident, and the strongest memory I have is of her laughter, her unmistakable throaty laugh. I think that's a great way to remember someone."

Regis Philbin, who lived near Richardson: "She was so caring and loving … She was a wonderful lady."

Jane Seymour: "It is so devastating, there are no words. She was so young and will be missed. I hope there is a lesson to be learned and that is to wear a helmet. Ever since my good friend Christopher Reeve had his accident I have been paranoid of hurting myself."

Amy Brenneman: "I can't think of any words. I just found out and I can't believe it. Life is short, and blessings to her family."

Dennis Haysbert: "I am just shocked, I knew Natasha, and she was a sweet, sweet lady. It was her time and God pulled her away. God bless the family, she will be missed."
