3-Year-Old Nevada Boy Attacked by 18-Foot Pet Python

The parents of a 3-year-old boy who was attacked by a pet python are taking a plea deal to avoid trial on felony child neglect, abuse and endangerment charges.

A lawyer said Thursday that 25-year-old Melissa Melendrez and 26-year-old Anthony Melendrez will enter Alford pleas April 2 to misdemeanor child abuse charges.

The plea means the parents won't admit wrongdoing but will acknowledge that prosecutors could prove the charges at trial.

Lawyer Kristina Wildeveld says the boy was treated with an antibiotic ointment following the Jan. 20 incident at the family's southeast Las Vegas home.

Authorities say the 18-foot snake coiled around the boy before Melissa Melendrez stabbed it more than a dozen times with a kitchen knife.
