A South Carolina man working on his tan escaped serious injury after the tanning bed he was in suddenly burst into flames, The News & Observer of Fayetteville reported.
The unidentified man told the paper that he was in the bed when he heard a popping noise and saw a flame near his foot.
He quickly opened the lid and jumped out.
The resulting fire led to the evacuation of a strip mall in Lake Wylie, S.C., where several stores suffered smoke damage, the News & Observer reported.
It took firefighters more than hour to put out the blaze.
Investigators are looking into what caused the tanning bed to catch fire.
