A scaffolding collapse triggered by a startled circus elephant injured more than a dozen children Saturday at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, the Indianapolis Fire Department reported.
The elephant was giving rides shortly before 10 a.m. when it became spooked and knocked over a mobile stairway. At least 15 children between the ages of 8 and 12, who were standing on, under and around the stairway, were treated at the scene, according to WRTV-TV.
One adult suffered a minor arm injury, the Indianapolis Fire Department reported. The incident took place inside the Pepsi Coliseum where the Murat Shrine Circus is being held.
The circus continued as scheduled as volunteer EMTs were able to access and treat the injured. None of the injured children were taken to the hospital, according to local reports.
