Authorities say a clerk at an Illinois guns and ammunition store shot a man who was trying to rob the business Wednesday afternoon, ChicagoBreakingNews.com reported.

Police responded to a call that a person was shot at Mike Schrank's Smoke 'N Gun. When they arrived, they found a man shot twice in the chest and once in the leg.

Witnesses say the clerk pulled a handgun on the man after he went behind the store's counter and became physical. During the confrontation, the clerk accidentally shot himself in the hand.

Police believe the man was trying to rob the store, according to a police statement.

Both men were rushed to area hospitals, where the man shot three times was taken into surgery. The clerk was taken to another hospital for treatment.
