Nursing Home Aide Charged in Freezing Death of Patient

A nursing home aide in Illinois is being charged with criminal neglect in the death of an 89-year-old patient who froze to death.

Sarah Wentworth was found dead in a snowbank last month in the courtyard of the nursing home in suburban Chicago. Twenty-three-year-old Heidi Leon is facing a number of counts including obstructing justice for allegedly lying to police about what happened.

DuPage County State's Attorney Joe Birkett says Leon didn't carry out a check after a door alarm went off. He says her failure to provide care "took a beloved matriarch from her family."

The family is suing the facility for gross neglect. The nursing home, the Arbor of Itasca, says it's cooperating with local authorities and the Illinois Department of Public Health.
