An Italian doctor, who made headlines last month for inseminating a woman with the sperm of her comatose husband, is now claiming to have cloned three human babies.

Dr. Severino Antinori claims that he created three babies using the human cloning technique nine years ago, Agence France-Presse reported.

“It involved two boys and a girl, who are 9 years old today,” Antinori said. “They were born healthy and they are in excellent health now.”

The children live in eastern Europe, Antinori said, but he did not provide further proof. He only said that he took cells from the three fathers, who were sterile and used the cells to fertilize the eggs of three women using a method called “nuclear transfer.”

Nuclear transfer involves removing the DNA from an unfertilized egg and injecting the nucleus, which contains the DNA. This was how Dolly the sheep was cloned, but Antinori said “an improvement” was added to the human procedure for better results.
