Americans are very concerned about the safety of the food they eat, and widespread awareness about contaminated peanut products is not easing those concerns.

A majority of Americans (55 percent) are either extremely or very concerned about the safety of they food they eat, while an additional 30 percent are somewhat concerned. Lower income households are the most concerned about the safety of their food.

Fully 63 percent of Americans with household incomes under $30,000 are extremely or very concerned about the safety of their food, compared to 39 percent of those with household incomes over $100,000.

Opinion Dynamics Corp. conducted the national telephone poll of 900 registered voters for FOX News from February 17 to February 18. The poll has a 3-point error margin.

Awareness of the contamination of peanut products at the Peanut Corporation of America is widespread and many residents have stopped eating peanut products as a result.

Nine-in-ten (91 percent) Americans have heard a great deal or some about the recall of contaminated peanut products.

Moreover, one-third (34 percent) have stopped eating products made with peanuts out of concern about salmonella. The lowest income households are the most likely to have stopped eating products made with peanuts — 41 percent of those with annual incomes under $30,000.
