Real news from the virtual world:
— SWING TOWN: Tiger Woods has been keeping a low profile as he prepares for his comeback from knee surgery — and a possible round of golf with President Barack Obama. But he did take time to check out the Gillette-EA Sports Champions of Gaming tournament in Orlando.
Woods said he's been playing a lot of his own game, "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09," While he recuperates.
"When my buddies are in town we always play it," he said.
Not to mention the kids in his neighborhood, who, Woods said, "are always proud when they finally beat me."
Woods had a few words about the next edition of his game: "It's a lot harder. We did make the putting more difficult."
He said he's gotten more involved with the game's development over the years, and "it's amazing how realistic it is. But five years from now this will look archaic."
At the tournament (which also featured four other EA Sports titles), the champ played a few holes against Australia's Steven Ward, who triumphed over thousands of other gamers in a global competition to determine the world's greatest "Tiger Woods" player.
"These guys can really bring it," Woods said.
— WELCOME TO GOTHAM: The New York Comic-Con isn't yet the essential geekfest that its San Diego cousin is, but it's becoming a viable alternative to the West Coast event.
More video-game companies made the New York show this year, giving fans hands-on time with some of the superhero games due this year.
We've been seeing demos for most of these titles for a while now: original creations like "Prototype," "Infamous" and "Champions Online"; licensed products like "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and "Watchmen: The End Is Nigh"; and even tangential stuff like "Dragon Age: Origins" and "Ghostbusters."
There was even a playable demo of Rockstar's "Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars," the first Nintendo DS installment of the blockbuster crime series.
There were a few announcements of brand-new games. In the works are Sega's "Iron Man 2," Activision's "Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2," Warner Bros.' "Wanted: Weapons of Fate" and Zen Studios' "The Punisher: No Mercy."
Then there's "Unbound Saga," an attempt to launch a game series (from Vogster) and a comic-book franchise (from Dark Horse Comics) simultaneously.
For true fanboys, the biggest news was the announcement that veteran comics writer Marv Wolfman is joining the staff of the forthcoming "DC Universe Online."
Wolfman, a veteran of classics like "The New Teen Titans" and "Crisis on Infinite Earths," is the most familiar name yet to sign on to write for Sony's ambitious virtual world.
— NEW IN STORES: It's Halloween in February! Get creeped out by Warner Bros.' "F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin" (for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3), Sega's "House of the Dead: Overkill" (Wii) and THQ's "Deadly Creatures" (Wii). ... On the much more adorable side, there's Sony's candy-colored sequel "LocoRoco 2" (PlayStation Portable).
