Sword Swallower Needs Surgery After Near-Fatal Move

A Chinese sword swallower was rushed to hospital after he attempted to swallow a curved sword for the first time.

Wang Liang, of Dengta city, had successfully performed with a straight sword for eight years, it was reported by the Huashang Morning Post.

But his incident-free run ended when he agreed to a request from the audience to perform with a curved sword to make his act more daring.

"While pushing the sword down, I felt sharp pains in my throat, so I immediately stopped and pulled the sword out," Wang said.

Surgeon Sun Lianhong, at Liaoyang Central Hospital, said the stunt left a gash in Wang's esophagus.

"Without immediate treatment and surgery, the patient could have died from infection," he said.

Doctors successfully performed open chest surgery for four hours to repair the damage.
