ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – The Pakistani government has welcomed President Barack Obama's decision to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility.
The Pakistani Foreign Ministry says closing the facility adds "the much needed moral dimension in dealing with terrorism."
The ministry's statement Saturday says Obama's decision was a step toward "upholding the primacy of the rule of law."
Pakistan helped the United States round up hundreds of militants in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, including several Al Qaeda leaders still incarcerated at Guantanamo.
Pakistan remains a key U.S. ally against the Taliban and Al Qaeda, who have established strongholds near Pakistan's border with Afghanistan.
