Police say a Los Angeles man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after allegedly killing a man who was stabbing the gunman's girlfriend and her mother.

Diedree Edwards is accused of firing a handgun Tuesday after seeing the two women being stabbed with a pocket knife at a Baldwin Hills parking lot. The 29-year-old Edwards then fled into a nearby apartment and held police at bay for several hours before surrendering.

Police say Edwards grabbed the handgun after seeing his 22-year-old girlfriend and her 47-year-old mother being attacked by Rhett Wilkins. Wilkins, the mother's ex-boyfriend, was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.

Both women have been hospitalized in stable condition.

Edwards was booked for murder and was being held on $1 million bail.
