Authorities were searching late Sunday night for the pilot of a small plane that crashed in the Florida panhandle, officials said.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says only the pilot was aboard the single-engine Piper Malibu. Bergen says the plane apparently crashed at about 9:20 p.m. CST.
The wreckage was found scattered across a swampy area near the city of Milton, Fla. The plane, which was registered to Indianapolis-based Heritage Aircraft LLC, was bound for Destin, Fla. It had taken off Sunday from Anderson, Ind.
Bergen says the plane was flying near Huntsville, Ala., when the pilot reported severe turbulence. The pilot later reported that the windshield had blown into the aircraft. Flight controllers lost contact when the plane was over Gadsden, Ala.
