State police say two people have died in a seven-vehicle accident along Route 78 in Union Township.
The accident happened about 11:15 a.m. in the eastbound express lanes of the highway near Exit 49A.
State Police spokesman Stephen Jones says a dump truck traveling in the westbound express lanes crossed into the eastbound express lanes and turned over, causing a chain reaction.
Television coverage shows dirt from the overturned dump truck covering several lanes along the highway.
Also involved in the accident were jackknife tractor-trailer and six other vehicles. Jones says the people killed were both in passenger vehicles.
Jones says the dump truck driver was taken to University Hospital in Newark. It was unclear what the extent of the driver's injuries are, or whether people are also injured.
