Dozens of people were forced out of their homes after a seven-alarm blaze ripped through an apartment complex in northern Philadelphia.
The blaze was reported shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday in the basement of one of the four buildings of the multistory complex in the Fern Rock section of the city, and wasn't declared under control until almost seven hours later, according to news reports .
"This fire is eating this building up, all of its contents," Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers to MyFOXPhilly.com
American Red Cross spokeswoman Janice Winston said 50 of the 60 units were occupied, and a shelter for about 30 people were set up at nearby church.
The building has businesses on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors.
No residents were injured, but one firefighter was transported to a local hospital after he slipped on a patch of ice, MyFOXPhilly reported.
It is not clear what caused the blaze.
