Woman With Two Reproductive Systems Beats Odds, Gets Pregnant

A woman in England received a huge surprise five weeks after doctors told her she was pregnant – she found out she has two reproductive systems and her baby is growing in one of her two wombs, the Daily Mail reported.

Lindsay Hasaj, 27, of Finchley, North London in England, is one of very few women who are known to have that kind of anatomy, but doctors are confident she will have a normal pregnancy.

Her condition, known as uterus didelphys, means she has two wombs, two cervixes and two vaginas. It also means her chances of getting pregnant were cut in half.

“I can’t wait to be a mom, and I know Tony is going to make the best dad,” Hasaj said, speaking of her husband. “Because of what has happened, I know this baby is extra special.”

Hasaj, who is three months pregnant, does not want to know the sex of the baby, which is due in July.

Doctors told Hasaj it was “pure luck” that she became pregnant. The first-time mom went to the hospital in November with abdominal pain, fearing an ectopic pregnancy (meaning the baby was growing outside the uterus).

When doctors ruled out an ectopic pregnancy, they ordered more tests and discovered that she had two cervixes and two wombs. Her vagina has one opening, but it divides into two internally.

Dr. Peter Bowen-Simpkins, a consultant obstetrician and gynecologist at the London Women's Clinic, said that in a case like Hasaj’s there is just a 50 percent chance of sperm finding and fertilizing an ovulating ovary.

Bowen-Simpkins said the condition can make the wombs and cervixes weaker than having one of each, but with regular check-ups, Hasaj should be fine.
