Attorney Charged With Holding Wife Prisoner Violates Protection Order

A Dubuque attorney accused of holding his common-law wife prisoner and beating her has now been charged with violating a protection order for allegedly calling the woman 17 times from jail.

Fifty-six-year-old James Axt was charged with 17 counts of violating a protection order after jail staff discovered that he had called the alleged victim's cell phone 17 times between Dec. 20 and Christmas Day.

He was charged in November with domestic assault with intent to inflict serious injury and false imprisonment.

Court documents show that the woman was allegedly held for two weeks in the couple's Dubuque home and suffered large bruises on her legs, two black eyes, a broken nose and broken ribs.
