New York Skier Killed in Austrian Avalanche

Austrian police say an avalanche has killed a U.S. citizen in western Austria.

Police in Vorarlberg province say the 28-year-old man from New York died Wednesday when he was buried by an avalanche while skiing off-piste in the Arlberg ski region near the village of Zuers.

They say the man's body was found buried under 3.9 feet of snow at an altitude of 7,218 feet. He was part of a guided group at the time of the accident.

Police on Thursday could not provide more details about the man's identity.

Avalanches are common in the Austrian Alps during the winter and often claim lives. On Sunday, avalanches killed three German ski tourists.
