Sean Avery Axed From Dallas Stars After 'Sloppy Seconds' Comment

Sean Avery has been cut from the Dallas Stars after calling his ex girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert “sloppy seconds.”

“I’m disappointed. I would imagine he is disappointed,” Star co-General Manager Bret Hull said on a media conference call about the decision. “Not only has it seemed to not work with Sean and his teammates, and maybe even the city of Dallas, but the team wasn’t playing well, and then, on top of it, the issues that came out off the ice compounded things.”

Avery has also checked into a 10-day treatment program, Us magazine reported. According to Hull, his contract – a four-year, $15.5 million deal – will still be honored as different career options are explored for the disgraced player.

Different avenues his career could take include a trade, an assignment to a team overseas or the minors or a buyout of his contract.

“He’s got to fix those demons he has before [he can be a valuable asset to a hockey team],” Hull said. “It becomes such a huge distraction that it almost takes away from his ability to play the game.

Avery was suspended a few weeks ago for making a degrading comment in reference to his ex-girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert – now dating Calgary Flames player Dion Phaneuf.

“I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don’t know what that’s about,” he said.
