John Daly Goes Berserk on Golf Course

Maybe John Daly was jonesing for a cigarette.

That's one possible explanation why the chain-smoking professioal golfer smashed a spectator's camera into a tree during the first round of the Australian Open on Thursday.

Brad Clegg was taking a picture of Daly in a clump of trees when apparently he got too close. Daly grabbed Clegg's camera and hurled it into a tree trunk, telling him, "You want it back, I'll buy you a new one."

"I feel it was very rude to put a camera that close to somebody's face," Daly said later in a statement, explaining Clegg was so close that the flash burned his eyes.

Clegg was a little more good natured about the exchange, saying he won't be after Daly for that promised new camera. "I don't think I'll be chasing him for the money," Clegg said. "He's a big bloke!"

Clegg also admitted to being close to Daly, but not close enough to elicit such a strong reaction. "I was bold, but I wasn't unreasonable," Clegg said.

The PGA is reviewing the situation to see if any action will be taken against Daly.

Daly is making his first visit to Australia since 2002, when he triple-bogeyed his last hole, threw his putter and ball into a pond, and failed to sign his scorecard, which led to his disqualification.
