A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who hanged a cat on Long Island.

The Suffolk County SPCA says police found the dead cat, with a rope around its neck, on Monday night in Patchogue.

A necropsy has determined it died from asphyxiation.

The local SPCA chief, Roy Gross, tells Newsday that the cat "suffered quite a bit" before dying.

Gross says the $2,500 reward is being posted "in the hopes that someone out there knows what happened to this poor animal."

Anyone with information is asked to call 631-382-7722. All calls will be kept confidential.
