The first American woman to complete a triple axel jump in competition, Tonya Maxine Harding is perhaps best known for her role in the attack on competitor Nancy Kerrigan at a practice session during the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.
Harding, of Portland, Oregon, later pleaded guilty to hindering the investigation of the attack and received three years probation, 500 hours of community service and a $160,000 fine. Harding's former husband, Jeff Gillooly, accepted a plea bargain in exchange for testimony against Harding.
Harding later attempted a comeback as a professional boxer (she retired with a 3-3 record) and had several run-ins with the law following the Kerrigan attack, including a three-day jail stint after being charged with fourth-degree domestic violence for assaulting a former boyfriend and a drunk driving arrest in 2002.
