A hearing is scheduled this week for a man accused of violating the conditions of his release from jail while awaiting trial on charges of impersonating a lawyer.

Howard O. Kieffer was released in September after pleading not guilty to federal charges of mail fraud and false statements. Prosecutors say he violated terms of his release by continuing to represent himself to clients as an attorney.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Charles Miller has scheduled a revocation hearing for Thursday in Bismarck.

The 53-year-old Kieffer is accused of lying on his application to practice law in federal court. Authorities say he has worked on cases in at least 10 states but North Dakota is the first to prosecute him. His trial is set for Jan. 6.
