A 15-year-old boy was killed and three other teenagers injured when a car being chased by police in an assault investigation crashed in west Mobile, police said.

Mobile Police spokesman Cpl. Charles D. Bagsby Jr. said the crash happened at 9:14 p.m. Tuesday. He said police were chasing a 1993 Ford Mustang when the vehicle, fleeing more than 80 mph, crashed into a ditch at the intersection of Cody Road and Grelot Road, ejecting all four from the vehicle.

In a statement Wednesday, Bagsby said officers were investigating an assault complaint that led to the vehicle. Police also said the vehicle had been reported stolen earlier Tuesday.

Bagsby said the 15-year-old died at the scene. His name was not immediately released. He said 18-year-old Richard Hamilton and 19-year-old Jacob Cartee and another 15-year-old boy, whose name was not released, were injured.

The injured 15-year-old was airlifted to USA Medical Center. An ambulance transported Hamilton and Cartee to the hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available.

Bagsby said an investigation continued Wednesday, with additional details expected to be released later.
