A Lafourche Parish councilman wants the state to adopt random drug tests for teachers and other public-school employees.

Lindel Toups wants the Lafourche council to make a formal request that the state Legislature pass such a law. Toups said he's been told of serious drug use among faculty members in the Lafouche school system. His source was a former school system employee.

But councilman Joe Fertitta says Toups' proposal could run into legal problems. And Mary Curole, principal of South Lafourche High School, said Toups' proposal unfairly singles out educators by not including other state employees.
