Disabled Woman Dies in California House Fire, Unable to Reach Wheelchair

Authorities say a 38-year-old disabled woman has died in a fire in a converted garage in the San Fernando Valley.

Los Angeles fire department spokeswoman D'Lisa Davies says firefighters quickly arrived at the house just a few blocks from a fire station in the Sherman Oaks area just before 2 a.m. Tuesday to find heavy smoke coming from the garage and received reports that people were inside.

Davies says firefighters searched the garage after the blaze was out and found the woman in a bathroom already killed by the fire.

Firefighters say it appeared the woman had been unable to reach her wheelchair.

Davies says it took 32 firefighters about 20 minutes to put out the blaze.

Investigators had yet to determine a cause of the fire, which caused about $120,000 in damage.
