A 19-year-old from Colorado who is crossing the country barefoot to raise awareness of a group that donates shoes to the needy is visiting his grandparents in Kennett.

Dashiel Alsup, of Coaldale, Colo., left Washington state on May 2 to begin his journey. He has traveled about 2,600 miles letting people know about Soles 4 Souls, a group that collects shoe donations for people in need around the world.

Alsup said he puts petroleum jelly on his feet to protect them, and says he wears flip flops in places like construction zones with unusually rough terrain.

He'll head for Nashville, Tenn., after leaving southeast Missouri, where his grandparents Orville and Sybil Alsup live.
