Police continued to hunt for clues into the whereabouts of two missing Missouri teens who disappeared during a football game and have called the boy a suspect — but stopped short of saying they believe he kidnapped the girl.
An Amber Alert issued Tuesday remained in effect for Christina "Paige" Alley, 14, and Levi Carlson, 16, who were last seen Friday night in a maroon 1996 Toyota Avalon with Missouri plate number PD0 A5U, MyFOXKC.com reported.
They vanished during a football game in Lathrop. Alley performed in the band at the game's halftime show and then got permission to leave.
When the pair didn't come home at all that night, Alley's parents called police, MyFOXKC.com reported.
Carlson was originally identified as a victim, but police have now named him a suspect, according to MyFOXKC.com.
Clinton County Sheriff's Major John Farmer said police twice asked the Missouri Highway Patrol to issue an Amber Alert for the couple, beginning Friday night. Both times, they were denied because they couldn't prove that an abduction had taken place — a criterion for an Amber Alert.
"We're not holding it as an abduction — that's the way the patrol has to put it out — and we haven't got that far that they have been abducted," Farmer told MyFOXKC.com.
"But the problem is, she was just the type of girl that kept in constant contact with her parents when she was out. If she was going to be late, she kept in contact. And there's been no contact at all."
So far, there has been no record that the pair have used the credit cards they had with them when they disappeared. Searches of woods in the area have turned up nothing.
Alley's cousin Derek Bohi told FOX News that the couple grew up together but have only been dating for about a month.
Bohi said that Carlson has been acting "weird" in recent days — getting into an argument with a youth pastor at church on Wednesday and a fight the following day with his father.
In an even more bizarre twist, the night the teen fought with the pastor, his stepmother had a heart attack and had to be rushed to the hospital, the Carlson family told FOX News.
Alley appeared visibly upset Friday during the band performance, Bohi said, relaying what her friends told investigators. She was seen talking on her cell phone before asking the director to leave for a family emergency, the friends said.
Alley then reportedly changed out of her uniform, leaving it in the locker room along with her phone and flute, Bohi said.
She is now being called an "endangered missing" person, according to her cousin.
Alley is 5' 2", 130 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a blue shirt with black pants and sandals and has a round birth mark on her hip.
Carlson is 5' 10", 225 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.
A Web site apparently set up by family or friends suggests that the couple may be headed toward Arkansas, California or Colorado, MyFOXKC.com reported. The site also suggests that Carlson is bi-polar and may be off his medication.
