Hello fashionistas. With the change of seasons comes the change of wardrobe, and fall/winter clothes are my absolute fave!

So about a week ago I packed up my shorts and tanks and lugged in from storage my sweaters, coats and cold weather clothes. I followed my own advice and separated my weekend and work wardrobe in different parts of my small un-Carrie Bradshaw like closet. As I perused last season’s styles though, all I could think of was BOOH! It’s not that I don’t have some great wear-to-work staples— a beautiful black cashmere crew, a few white button downs, and of course my favorite wool pants. But my work wardrobe was in dire need of some awesomness! I decided to go shopping.

The key would be to inject some print, color and texture to my office basics. And so I hit the stores with the full intention of not breaking the bank. My first attempt was to find something printed. Style guru I may be, but when it comes to my own wardrobe I tend to stay away from bold prints. I decided however to heed my own advice and try something new. I found a beautiful print dress from Banana Republic .

It was far from overwhelming in muted black and white and the silk is a welcome change to cashmere and wool. It would be equally pretty with bare legs and sandals as it would with boots and tights. I could even throw it over a pair of jeans! And the price was right— at $130, I know I’ll get my money’s worth. First mission accomplished.

My next goal was to find one or two colorful tops. As I mentioned, I’ve got my fair share of beige, white and black and I needed some brights, baby! I decided instead of another heavy sweater, I'd pick up some tanks and tees. J. Crew has these adorable spaghetti strap styles that I can wear under my cardigans and button down shirts. They will give me my desired pop of color without being too memorable, and the floral detail makes them special. And at $29.50, picking up a couple was definitely affordable. If the flower is not for you, Gap has plain tanks for even less—only $14.50! This is a great tip stylistas! Buy pieces that work with your exisiting wardrobe!

My last mission was to find some something shiny! And there’s nothing like a new pair of shoes to get your wardrobe going. I found a gorgeous pair of marigold patent leather pumps that are to die for! And since I saved so much buying those tanks instead of sweaters, I went for the $238 price tag. If you can afford to, don't skimp on shoes. Yes, you can definitely get a great pair for under $100, but if you're in the mood for a splurge, shoes are a great buy. If you take care of them they'll last season after season.

So my fellow fashion lovers, when you’re sick of what’s in your closet, it’s not necessary to max out your Mastercard or fall in a heap on the floor in a fashion depression. Adding a few special pieces can invigorate your existing wardrobe.

With that said, this is only half the battle to stay looking fabulous at the office. You must be prepared for wardrobe malfuctions. Check out my article on creating your very own Wardrobe Malfunction Emergency Kit.
