A three-year-old British boy has been taken into care and his mother has been arrested after he was found alone in a burning house.

The toddler was found sitting on the floor of a locked bedroom with a doughnut and a bowl of milk by his side, according to the News Shopper newspaper.

He was rescued from a first-floor room in a maisonette in Deptford, south east London, just after 9:30 a.m. yesterday.

Watch manager John Banks told the newspaper: "We have never seen anything like this. We have found kids alone before — but not locked in a room in a burning building."

The boy's mother, who is in her 40s, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of child neglect, a Scotland Yard spokesman said.

The toddler was taken to hospital for checks and then discharged, a London Fire Brigade spokesman said.
