Schoolchildren playing in woods near their home in the U.K. sparked a major police investigation after they found scovered a human skull.

Authorities were called to the scene in Great Britain with an anthropologist, who confirmed that the skull belonged to a young female.

A search team combed the area and discovered additional body parts.

The remains are believed to have been at the site for as long as 10 years, a spokesman for Sussex Police told SkyNews.com.

Police said they are keeping an open mind as they investigate the gruesome find.

It was too early to speculate about how the victim died, and the priority for police was to establish her identity, Det. Chief Inspector Adam Hibbert of the Major Crime Branch said.
