A medic for the Arizona Department of Public Safety was killed in Sedona, Ariz., after he was struck by the rotor blade of a rescue helicopter.

A DPS helicopter team was called Monday afternoon to Bear Mountain to rescue two stranded hikers, who were later flown to safety.

As Bruce Harrolle was escorting one of the patients into the chopper, authorities said the medic was struck by one of the helicopter's rotor blades and fatally injured.

The 36-year-old Harrolle was a nine-year veteran with DPS and was based out of Flagstaff.

DPS officials say Harrolle's death will be investigated and the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.
