Hospital to Remove Window With Virgin Mary 'Image'

A Catholic hospital in Springfield plans to remove a window that some claim displays an apparition of the Virgin Mary.

Hundreds of people have visited Mercy Medical Center to see the second-story office window since the image was first noticed on Sept. 30.

Hospital officials released a statement Wednesday saying they would remove the window, but would continue to study it over the next few months and may put it on display.

Hospital spokesman Mark Fulco said the hospital believes the image is "unique," but removing the window "is necessary for returning to normal operations."

Hospital officials have said engineers who examined the window believed the image may be a mineral deposit that built up in the sealed area between two panes of glass.
