Officials in India are probing the deaths of 35 newborns within a four-day period at a run-down hospital in the eastern part of the country, Agence France-Presse reported.

The premature babies succumbed to pneumonia and septicemia in the large state-run hospital in West Bengal state.Authorities said the 600-bed hospital crammed 140 children into a ward with just 40 beds. Eyewitnesses reported sightings of rodents, cats and dogs inside the children's section of the hospital, according to the report.

At times, the babies were left unattended while two of the four doctors on duty went on break without notice, the hospital’s superintendent said.
