Houston Astros pitcher Brandon Backe was one of at least eight people arrested early Sunday after a brawl at The San Luis Resort on Galveston Island, according to newspaper and broadcast reports.

Police said the disturbance broke out after a wedding guest shoved an officer who told the man he couldn't bring an open container of alcohol into a bar at the resort.

Two people were tasered by police and pepper spray was used on one of them. One man was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Houston.

The Houston Chronicle reported that a police report said Backe was told by police to back away and struggled with officers when they tried to handcuff him.

The newspaper reported that Backe was released on $1,500 bail after being accused of resisting arrest, search and transportation by using force against an officer.

Calls by The Associated Press to Galveston police and the Houston Astros were not immediately returned Sunday night.

"We are aware of an incident involving Brandon. We have spoken with him regarding his version of the event. Since this is a legal matter, any further comment on our part would be inappropriate," the Astros said in a statement released to Houston television station KRIV.

Dennis Bird, a friend of Backe's, described Backe as an innocent bystander who was arrested for doing nothing wrong.

Another of those arrested was a branch director from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, who was in Galveston to help with Hurricane Ike recovery, according to media reports.
