Detroit police say a 4-month-old boy was fatally shot as he slept with his mother in their apartment.

City Council President Monica Conyers said Monday the public should be "mad as hell" about the killing and says it shows the need for a death penalty for killing children. Michigan has no death penalty.

Deputy Chief Marshall Lyons says Walter Bogan III and his 25-year-old mother were alone in the apartment when about 10 shots were fired about 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

Lyons tells the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News at least two men reached the second-floor apartment by climbing an outside staircase. He says it appears at least two different guns were fired.

The baby died of a head wound at Sinai Grace Hospital.
