Texas residents of a fragile peninsula ravaged by Hurricane Ike jammed the lone road home to begin rebuilding their lives.
Traffic backed up at least 5 miles early Friday on the narrow Bolivar Peninsula and some commuters spent more than an hour on the road.

Many were attempting to drive home for the first time since Ike blasted ashore Sept. 13.
The peninsula's estimated 4,000 residents are being allowed to return on a "look and leave" basis.
They can go home each day but can't stay since there's still no power, water, sewer or telephone service.
The road was mostly cleared of debris.
