A Metrolink commuter train fatally struck a man Wednesday and witnesses reported he had jumped on the tracks, police said.
The approximately 50-year-old man died at the scene, said Fire Department spokesman Ron Myers.
The man was struck about 9:20 a.m. in the Sylmar area of the San Fernando Valley.
San Fernando Police Lt. Tony Ruelas said three witnesses reported they saw the man jump in front of the train after looking up and down the tracks.
The witnesses said a crossing gate was down, red lights were flashing and the train's horn was sounding, Ruelas said.
On Sept. 12 a Metrolink train collided with a freight train in Chatsworth, killing 25 people and injuring more than 130 others.
