Brazilian police say they have rescued a man who was locked up for three days in the trunk of his own car.

A police officer says two heavily armed men abducted a real estate broker on Friday to use his car for "a series of burglaries." She declined to be identified because she was not authorized to speak to the press.

The officer says that the car ran out of gas and the attackers abandoned it in a crime-infested neighborhood in the southeastern city of Belo Horizonte.

She says police came across the car and heard "banging noises" coming from the trunk.

She says the victim was unhurt "but shaken, and in need of a good bath."
