BRADENTON, Fla. – A Florida man told authorities he was sorry and turned himself in a day after allegedly robbing a bank, police said.
Deputies say 43-year-old Charles Bernard Whitley of Manatee County called the sheriff's office from a gas station pay phone Thursday morning. A sheriff's spokesman says Whitley told deputies what he had done, apologized and waited to be picked up.
Detectives say Whitley gave a bank teller a note Wednesday morning saying he had a gun and wanted money. The teller gave him a handful of cash, but Whitley stopped her from giving him more, saying he wasn't greedy. He apologized to the bank employees before leaving.
After his arrest, Whitley told detectives he had already spent all the money on drugs and alcohol.
He was charged with armed robbery.
