NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Authorities say a man from New Smyrna Beach, Fla., was bitten by a shark while he was surfing.
Volusia County Beach Patrol spokesman Capt. Scott Petersohn said the shark bit the 20-year-old's left foot about 3 p.m. Sunday while he was swimming out to catch a wave, his surfboard in tow.
Petersohn said the unidentified man's friends took him to a hospital for treatment.
The man, who had four lacerations to his foot and instep, also got treatment on the scene.
"The wound wasn't life- or limb-threatening," Petersohn told the Daytona Beach News-Journal. "We get a lot worse injuries of people falling on the (Daytona Beach) pier."
