NEW YORK – New York City police have arrested a suspect in an assault caught on surveillance tape showing an 85-year-old woman being choked and robbed on an elevator.
Charges against the 36-year-old suspect are pending. The man was arrested after a veteran detective saw the footage on television and recognized him from a similar assault six years ago. Police say the man is also suspected in at least one other attack; there have been a dozen similar incidents since June.
The footage from last week's attack in Brooklyn shows the suspect entering the building behind Lillian France, who walks slowly with a cane. The two board the elevator together; he pounces on her from behind choking her until she passes out.
