A British who ran to help an injured pedestrian Tuesday was shocked to learn that the woman was actually his wife, the U.K.’s Sky News is reporting.

James Peters, 60, was on his way to pick his wife up from a bus stop when he drove past the scene of an accident on a local highway. He pulled over to help and even assisted paramedics by holding a saline drip bag for the victim, who was seriously injured, Sky News said.

But when another passer-by who stopped to help handed him the victim’s handbag, Peters was devastated to learn that the victim was actually Susan Peters, his wife of 40 years, the Daily Telegraph reported.

According to the Telegraph, the highway was closed for more than five hours. Peters was airlifted to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

The couple, who have three sons, had just celebrated their anniversary two days before the accident.

“She was the better half of me and now my better half is gone, I’m totally devastated,” Sky News quoted Peters as saying.

British authorities have arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of causing Susan Peters’ death by dangerous driving, Sky News reported.
