A dog died in Florida after an attack by a swarm of honeybees.

Lisa Pham said her 18-month-old pit bull mix Mimi was outside on a chain when the bees attacked Monday.

Pham said she tried to drive the bees away by spraying water, but she got stung and decided to call the fire department.

Firefighters also used water hoses to chase away the bees. By then the dog had suffered more than 1,000 stings and died after being taken to a veterinary clinic. It's not clear why the bees attacked Mimi.

The beehive was located underneath a mobile home next door. A beekeeper said the insects were Italian honeybees, not the more aggressive Africanized honeybees that were initially suspected.
