A suburban Chicago zoo says it plans to reopen an exhibit that was closed after a malfunction in the heating and cooling system of a pool killed 16 stingrays.
Brookfield Zoo officials say the Sharks! at Stingray Bay exhibit will reopen Saturday.
It has been closed since July 14th, when more than half of the southern and cownose stingrays in the 16,000-gallon exhibit died. The zoo says the water temperature rose to 89 degrees from 79 degrees, causing the deaths.
Dan Wharton, senior vice president for animal programs, said Thursday that a new surveillance system will take the pool's temperature every 10 minutes.
Staff will make hourly checks during the night. Also, two new transformers will keep power to the life support system at a constant voltage.
