Efforts to get a Jessica's Law passed in Vermont calling for a mandatory 25-year minimum sentence for some sex offenders are drawing widespread support, with thousands of residents signing petitions in support.
Heightened interest in the matter follows last month's abduction and killing of 12-year-old Brooke Bennett of Braintree. Her uncle, 42-year-old Michael Jacques of Randolph, has been charged in her kidnapping.
One petition circulated by Middlesex resident Angelo Napolitano has drawn more than 2,000 signatures supporting a Jessica's Law for Vermont. A separate petition drive launched by Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie is garnering widespread support as well.
