A suspected bomb mailed to the Chatham County Courthouse was a hoax, police said Monday after evacuating the courthouse and shutting down streets and businesses within two blocks.
Savannah-Chatham County police spokeswoman Judy Pal said a bomb squad determined the device was bogus on close inspection after removing it from the downtown courthouse.
The package had been mailed to the district attorney's office on the top floor. Police were called after an employee opened the padded envelope, revealing wires inside.
The building was evacuated about 1 p.m. and nearby streets were closed. Officers swept the building with bomb dogs later Monday afternoon.
The envelope was processed through the courthouse's mail room, which screens for suspicious packages, said Chatham County Sheriff's Lt. Tommy Tillman. He said the package did not raise any red flags in the mail room.
Courthouse staff were expected to be able to return to the building late Monday afternoon, said police Lt. Scott Simpkins.
