NEW YORK – Divers were resuming their search Saturday for a 16-year-old girl apparently swept away by a current while swimming near Rockaway Park beach in Queens.
The U.S. Coast Guard said search crews on Friday focused on a 5-mile-wide stretch and searched for hours. Firefighters and police were on the scene.
Another teenager was plucked from the waters and taken to a hospital. She's in stable condition.
Emergency crews were called to the scene around 3:40 p.m. Friday after a report of swimmers in distress. Officials say it's likely the missing teenager drowned.
With temperatures in high 90s expected this weekend, officials are warning New Yorkers to beware of dangerous rip tides and strong currents at city beaches.
